2012 Grand Prize Tree Planting in Oxford

Go Green Youth Challenge Tree Planting

OXFORD –Michigan Arbor Day Alliance along with ITC and Oxford Parks and Recreation celebrated with Daniel Axford and Oxford Elementary-Extended Day Program, the grand prize winner of the Go Green Youth Challenge (GGYC) on May 14th. The GGYC engages Michigan youth in environmental stewardship, community development and service-learning through a statewide effort to plant trees in Michigan. Children, pre-K through 12^th grade, were challenged to collect coins, as an individual, classroom or club, from Jan. 16 – April 9, 2012.  The coins collected directly fund community tree plantings. As the team that raised the most for the GGYC, Daniel Axford and Oxford Elementary-Extended Day Program were awarded 15 trees to plant in their community! A representative from the school was also recognized at the State Arbor Day Celebration on April 27 at Potter Park Zoo in Lansing.

“It was a great day to plant trees. The students were very excited to know they helped raise money to plant trees in Michigan and their own community. This was the second year of the program, and the second year Daniel Axford has won! The fact the students could see proof of their hard work, saw how much the trees planted last year had grown, was inspiring. This is what our program is all about, educating youth about the importance of trees so they can pass the message on to their peers and family,” said Jennifer Hunnell, Michigan Arbor Day Alliance Program Coordinator.

Nine trees were planted with the help of volunteers from the GGYC Grand Prize Team, Oxford Parks and Recreation, ITC, and Michigan Arbor Day Alliance. The trees went to five different elementary schools.  Classes at several of the schools were able to come out and participate.  The remaining trees will be planted at a local park later this year.  Photos of the event and planting can be view at, www.miarbordayalliance.com/photoalbum.

The Go Green Youth Challenge raised a total of $15,470 for tree planting in Michigan.  Michigan Arbor Day Alliance would like to thank everyone who participated including the sponsors, ITC Holdings, Lansing Board of Water and Light, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Eaton Conservation District, Michigan State University Federal Credit Union and Glenn Buege Chevorlet of Eaton Rapids.

And the Winner Is…

The Michigan Arbor Day Alliance is pleased to announce the winner of the 2012 Go Green Youth Challenge!

Daniel Axford Elementary and Oxford Schools Extended Day Program raised over $400 this year in support of trees in Michigan.  This is the second year Daniel Axford Elementary and Oxford Schools has won the Go Green Youth Challenge.  We would like to thank them for their continued support and for the time and energy put into collecting such an impressive total.

Here is what Linda Travnikar, a teacher at Daniel Axford Elementary had to say:  ”The Oxford School District supports thinking green and promotes this philosophy to our students.  Our students saw this program as an opportunity to do our part to keep Michigan both beautiful and green!”

 

The Go Green Youth Challenge is a state-wide initiative to engage youth in environmental stewardship, community development, and service-learning by participating in a campaign to plant trees in Michigan.  All money collected during the Challenge directly goes to tree plantings across the state.  Be sure to look for next year’s Go Green Youth Challenge in January 2013!

The GGYC engages Michigan youth in environmental stewardship, community development and service-learning through a statewide effort to plant trees in Michigan. Children, pre-K through 12^th grade, were challenged to collect coins, as an individual, classroom or club, from Jan. 15 – April 1, 2011.  The coins collected directly fund community tree plantings. As the team that raised the most for the GGYC, Daniel Axford and Oxford Elementary-Extended Day Program were awarded 15 trees to plant in their community! They also attended the State Arbor Day Celebration on April 29 at Potter Park Zoo in Lansing.

“The day couldn’t have been more perfect. The students were very excited to know they helped raise money to plant trees in Michigan and their own community. Even as elementary students they know trees help provide oxygen, shade and homes for birds. This is what our program is all about, educating youth about the importance of trees so they can pass the message on to their peers and family,” said Rachael Wood, Michigan Arbor Day Alliance Program Coordinator.

A ground breaking ceremony was held at Daniel Axford Elementary. Students participated in an interactive discussion about why and where we should plant trees. They also had the opportunity to ask tree questions from a forester. After the ceremony, 15 trees were planted with the help of volunteers from the GGYC Grand Prize Team, Oxford Parks and Recreation, ITC, DTE Energy Foundation and Michigan Arbor Day Alliance. Michigan Arbor Day Alliance invites you to attend the grand prize community tree planting in Oxford.  The event will take place Monday, June 6th at 1:00pm.  A ground breaking ceremony at Daniel Axford, located at 74 Mechanic, will begin at 1:00pm along with a group photo of the winning students.  Attendees are invited to help plant 15 trees. Tree planting sites include both elementary schools and Seymour Lake Township Park.
