If you are a K-6 classroom in the Greater Lansing area and looking for some additional funding for a project this school year, then this opportunity with the Capital Region Community Foundation may be for you.  By the way, this is an opportunity to introduce your students to the grant writing process because the grant application has to be filled out by them!  What a great way for students to really take ownership of a classroom project.  If you’re interested, hurry, the deadline is November 1, 2013.

Mini Grants Now Available for K-6 Classrooms with Additional Funds Available for College Positive Projects

The Capital Region Community Foundation’s Youth Action Committee (YAC) has $4,000 in grant funds available for Elementary School Mini-Grants for classroom projects in the greater Lansing area. Mini-Grants of up to $500 are designed to introduce young people to grantmaking and philanthropy while encouraging meaningful short-term projects that promote a positive learning environment. This year, an additional $1,500 in grant funds are available specifically for projects that encourage or promote a college positive community.

Projects should promote a positive learning environment and can take a variety forms within this theme. YAC members have identified the following suggested project focus areas:

  • Higher Education– visit a college campus, address overcoming barriers to getting to college, bring in speakers with various occupations and higher education degrees
  • Anti-Bullying– host a guest speaker, organize community conversations, develop an awareness/prevention campaign that encourages inclusion and disability awareness
  • Arts & Culture– visit museums or have a culture day with costumes and props
  • Environment & Science– build a garden, raise awareness of recycling, visit a nature center

Download the application form and guidelines on this webpage (look to the right). Application deadline: November 1, 2013. Contact Ashley Gulker with questions.
